Eating high amounts of low-calorie, nutrient-rich, and low-sodium foods while eating smaller portions of refines, processes and fast foods can help you steer clear of heart disease.

Fruits and vegetables provide may of the vitamins and minerals that are necessary for good health. Vegetables are naturally low in calories and their high fiber content helps us feel full. These foods include broccoli, spinach, carrots, apples and berries

Generally, your serving of fruits or vegetables should take up half the size of your plate.

Proteins

Foods that are high in protein help the body build, maintain and repair tissues while providing the body with nutrients such at Vitamin B and Iron. These foods include eggs, nuts, poultry, seafood, beef, and seeds.

Protein rich foods should take up roughly a quarter of your plate.

Carbs

While choosing carbs to eat, it is important to choose whole grains. Whole grains are are nutritious and have lots of dietary fiber to help you feel fuller longer. These types of foods include whole-wheat bread, brown rice, and oatmeal.

This should generally take up a quarter of your plate.

Fats

Fats are a great source of energy. They protect your organs and help your body absorb vitamins. Unsaturated fats are healthy fats that are important to include in your diet. These include avocado, corn, walnuts, salmon, tuna and sunflower seeds.

These foods should generally take up an eighth of your plate.
